Downtown Portland's Holiday Season Is Running on Rooms It Already Had

Downtown Portland is coming into the holidays with its new food hall still a construction site and its old rooms filling back up. Over the last month, a bar that has served drinks since 1902 reopened after a $750,000 renovation. A brunch spot came back under the employee who started there washing dishes. A Michelin-starred chef's first Portland bar opened inside the Heathman Hotel. Starting November 13, the vacant storefronts themselves get a holiday job.

None of it needed new construction. The James Beard Public Market on SW Alder is still about a year away from opening. For now, a November evening downtown means going back to familiar addresses.

The rooms that came back

Kelly's Olympian reopened Tuesday, October 27, at 426 SW Washington Street. Bridgetown Bites reported that the renovation cost about $750,000 and covered both the inside and outside of the building. It added a passageway between the bar and the performance space, and a coworking space from UrbanWork now sits upstairs. Kelly's Olympian has been operating in Portland since 1902. So a bar that has served the city for more than a century has spent its latest money on getting people from the drinks to the stage more easily. That makes it a better stop on a night that includes live music.

Grits N' Gravy came back before that, on October 10. The Southern-style brunch restaurant had taken over the former Little Bird space downtown in late 2021 and closed last June. It reopened under Jesús Alejandro Chipres, a longtime employee who took over management. The Portland Mercury, citing an interview with Bridgetown Bites, reported that Chipres started as a dishwasher before moving up to serving. He plans to keep the menu mostly as it was: shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, chicken-fried steak.

In both cases, people who already knew the room are the ones bringing it back. The menu at Grits N' Gravy is staying the same. Kelly's Olympian put its money into the building it has always had.

New names, older addresses

The new arrivals moved into buildings downtown already had.

Bar Sprezzatura opened Friday, October 16, inside the Heathman Hotel at 1001 SW Broadway. It is Michael Mina's Venetian bar-bistro and shares its name with his San Francisco location. The executive chef is Justin Ramirez, who previously cooked at Coquine. According to the Mercury, the menu is built on cicchetti, the small snacks served in Venetian bars, along with handmade pasta, local meat and seafood, pizzette, and plenty of spritzes and wine. A menu of small plates and spritzes suits the hour between leaving work and the start of a show.

Marsh & Mallow held its grand opening on October 16 as well, at 855 SW Yamhill Street. Bridgetown Bites noted that the shop had been in its own space since early October. Its s'mores are gluten-free, and it also serves hot tea, cocoa and apple cider, along with a pizza s'more the Bridgetown Bites writer said they couldn't stop thinking about. The owners, Rod and Freddie Trinidad-Estrada, describe the business as queer-, immigrant- and Latino-owned. If you are taking kids downtown in late November, it is a natural stop for something warm.

Fifteen floors up at 525 SW Morrison Street, Departure has scheduled Pau Hana, a Hawaiian food and cocktail pop-up on its East Deck. It runs from November 2 through January. Bridgetown Bites reported that the menu draws on executive chef U'ilaniku'ulei "U'i" Vele's upbringing in Wai'anae, O'ahu. It is a short run, so it fits the same holiday stretch as everything else on this list.

The empty storefronts get a holiday job

The vacant spaces are part of downtown's plan for the season too. Downtown Portland Clean & Safe is running the PDX Pop-Up Shops from November 13 through December 26. The program turns empty downtown retail spaces into temporary shops for local designers and artists. You'll find the listing on Travel Portland's holiday events page.

For six weeks, some of downtown's empty storefronts will have lights on and local makers inside. They open the same week the city's tree arrives, so a weekday holiday-shopping trip can be built around the Square's calendar.

The Square's calendar, in order

Pioneer Courthouse Square at 701 SW 6th Avenue anchors the season. These are the 2026 dates from The Square's events calendar and the event pages tied to it:

Date Event Details
Tue., Nov. 10 Tree arrival Portland's 75-foot Douglas fir arrives, with Santa and free hot chocolate
Fri., Nov. 27 42nd Annual Tree Lighting 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., a sing-along led by Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini, and Santa lights nearly 10,000 bulbs
Dec. 4 to 13 Public Menorah Lit daily from 4 to 6:30 p.m. by the Chabad Center for Jewish Life
Dec. 11 to 12 Portland Holiday Brew Fest Heated tents, regional winter beers and ciders, DJs
Fri., Dec. 18 12th Annual Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition Caroling through nearby downtown streets, with the final performance at the Square
Sat., Dec. 19 35th Annual Tuba Christmas 1:30 p.m.

The Tree Lighting falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving and ends at 6:45 p.m. That leaves time for dinner at Bar Sprezzatura, a show at Kelly's Olympian, or cocoa at Marsh & Mallow afterward. On Brew Fest weekend, the Square becomes a beer event, so families wanting a quieter visit may prefer the Menorah lighting earlier that month or Tuba Christmas on December 19.

Across the South Park Blocks at Director Park, 815 SW Park Avenue, Mike Bennett Studios says Snow Day Village returns this season and runs from November 2026 into January 2027.

Saturdays on both ends of downtown

Two markets keep running on Saturdays through the holidays:

  • Portland Saturday Market, 2 SW Naito Parkway in Old Town, is open November 7, 14, 21 and 28, and December 5, 12 and 19, according to Travel Portland.
  • PSU Farmers Market, in the South Park Blocks near SW Park and Montgomery, switches to winter hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting November 7. It is closed December 26, according to the Portland Farmers Market.

You can start a Saturday at the farmers market and end at the riverfront, with the Square, Director Park and the Yamhill and Morrison addresses in between. The PSU market also runs past the holidays: winter hours continue into March 2027, so the Saturday routine doesn't end in December.

The building that is still waiting

The James Beard Public Market, at 606 and 622 SW Alder Street, is the downtown project people have been waiting on longest. Prosper Portland's project page now says it is slated for summer 2027, with more than 40 small businesses expected inside. In January, OregonLive reported that project officials were aiming for early 2027. Either way, the market will not be part of this holiday season. Until it opens, downtown's food and drink comes from places like Kelly's Olympian, Grits N' Gravy, the Heathman and the Yamhill storefront where Marsh & Mallow opened.
